Cardiac Rehabilitation
The cardiac rehabilitation program at Rutherford Regional Health System is designed to support your individual journey to a healthier heart. If you're worried about your risk for heart disease, or you are recovering from a heart event, our staff is ready to support you. We offer a welcoming, supportive environment and an individualized approach to nutrition and exercise tailored to your lifestyle.
Treatment can begin in the hospital following a heart event, or after discharge. Talk to your provider about joining our cardiac rehabilitation program. Most insurance plans partially or fully cover the cost of this service.
You may qualify for cardiac rehabilitation if you have experienced any of the following:
If you have experienced a heart attack, stent, or open heart surgery, you may be a candidate for cardiac rehabilitation. We currently offer phase II cardiac rehabilitation for patients with a physician referral. Diagnosis’ that may qualify for our program include:

- A heart attack (also known as a “myocardial infarction”) in the past 12 months
- Coronary Bypass Surgery
- Valve replacement or repair
- Angioplasty or “stent” placement
- Heart transplant
- Stable chest pain (also known as stable angina)
- Congestive heart failure
- Coronary artery disease
- Peripheral artery disease (PAD)

If you have ever been diagnosed with a chronic pulmonary disorder you may be a candidate for pulmonary rehabilitation. We currently offer phase II pulmonary rehabilitation for patients with a physician referral. Diagnosis’ that may qualify for our program include:

Our program is typically 36 sessions with patients attending 2-3 sessions a week. Our classes are held in group format, however the program is individualized to help patients reach their goals through lifestyle modification. The exercise equipment we have available are:

American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation Certified Program
Rutherford Regional Health System received Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation Program certification from the American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation. Our program is recognized as a leader in the field of cardiovascular and pulmonary rehabilitation because they offer the most advanced practices available. We are dedicated to helping people with cardiovascular and pulmonary problems recover faster and improve their quality of life. Both programs include exercise, education, counseling, and support for patients and their families.
Offered Programs
Supervised Exercise Therapy (SET)
S.E.T. is recommended as the initial treatment for patients suffering from IC (intermittent claudication), the most common symptom experienced by people with peripheral artery disease (PAD). S.E.T. involves the use of intermittent walking exercise, which alternates periods of walking and resting for patients experiencing moderate-to-maximum claudication.
Exercise for Life
Exercise for Life is a private pay membership program where participants have independent use of equipment in the Cardiac and Pulmonary rehab department of Rutherford Regional Medical Center. Participants can choose to use equipment any time during open business hours, as many times per week as they choose. A signed waiver from your physician allowing participation is required. No contract required.

SilverSneakers offers thousands of online instructor-led fitness classes for all ability levels, focusing on strength and cardio, among other areas. You may be eligible for reduced rates through your Medicare Advantage Plan. Learn more about SilverSneakers.
